Welcome to SHPE Ohio South West

26 August 2005

The SHPE Ohio Southwest Professional Chapter (Ohio) became an official member of the SHPE "familia" in July 2005. The chapter originated in Dayton and plans to serve the Southwest Ohio region, specifically Dayton, Cincinnati, Columbus, and nearby areas. We celebrated our inception with a "SHPE Latin Night" event, where members took free dance lessons and participated in a dance competition.

We're very proud of the fact that, although the chapter has been in existence for a little over two months, our members are already committed and quickly moving forward to accomplish our first year goals: increasing our professional membership through regional expansion and partnerships with local industries, identifying and participating in community service opportunities, and encouraging the creation of student chapters in the area.

In July we visited a Latino "picnic", jointly hosted by General Electric and Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, to spread the word about our local group. The visit sparked interest from many GE and P&G employees who used to be SHPE student members and were looking for a professional chapter in their area. We're currently designing a strategy to reach these professionals and to motivate their active participation.

As part of our community outreach programs, SHPE MVP partnered with the East End Community Services Corporation to provide primary computer instruction to local Hispanics completely free of charge. Our SHPE members will volunteer their time and knowledge to set-up and teach a basic computer course.

Student chapters also rank high on our priority list. Our goal is to partner and provide mentoring to the local student chapters at the University of Dayton and Ohio State University. We'd also like to help with the creation of student chapters at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, and Wright State University.
